INSIGHTS & RESOURCES

Collecting information before discussing an inheritance

Prepare an organized file of heir information, assets, liabilities and prior family discussions.

Separate identity information from assets

Prepare basic information about the deceased, the date of death and known family relationships. Note the date and issuer of any existing inheritance certificate. The Ministry of Justice provides an inheritance-certificate query service through e-Devlet; a query and an application for a new certificate are different processes.

Consider more than property

List known real estate, bank relationships, vehicles, company interests and ongoing agreements separately. Record the source and currency of each entry, marking uncertainty. Do not access another person’s accounts without authority. Appropriate official enquiries can be discussed at the meeting.

Include liabilities and ongoing matters

Keep available loan, tax, contractual and litigation records in a separate section. Mark amounts or scope that remain unclear. Inheritance options and deadlines require individual assessment rather than comparison with one online example. Raise any received formal notice promptly.

Turn family discussions into clear questions

Record agreed points, disagreements and steps already taken. Distinguish verbal expectations from signed documents. Preserve complete wills, agreements and proposed distribution documents without alteration. The initial meeting helps establish scope and missing records rather than supplying a definitive allocation without reviewing the file.

Before your consultation

  • Existing inheritance certificate and key dates
  • Known assets and liabilities with sources
  • Wills, agreements and prior transaction records
